What is mesh topology?

In Mesh Topology, all Network Nodes are connected to other Nodes. It does not require any kind of Central Hub, Switch or Computer which acts as a Central Point to forward the messages.

In this, each computer not only sends its own messages, but it also relays data from other computers. In mesh topology, there is connection on the basis of Wired and Wireless.

Definition of Mesh Topology
Mesh topology is a type of networking in which all nodes distribute data among themselves. The way the data is distributed in it, it forms a mesh shape, hence it is called Mesh Topology.

What is mesh topology?
These networks are set up to easily route data between devices and clients. Mesh network topology creates different types of routes to perform tasks between connected nodes. This helps in increasing the resilience of the network when nodes or connections fail.

Larger mesh networks also contain various routers, switches, and other devices. Hundreds of Wireless Mesh Nodes can come under a Mesh Network.

How do Mesh Networks work?
Routing or Flooding techniques are used to send messages in mesh networks. In routing, a message has to travel from node to node to reach its destination.

  • Hybrid topology

There should be continuous connection in Mesh Network. If the path breaks in the meantime, it must be reconfigured using self-healing algorithms.

Flooding technique relies on distributing data from one node to another in a network. Data is sent by a subset of nodes because it is impossible for all nodes to be available at the same time. Each node has a subset of data.

Use of Mesh Networks
Mesh networks are used in small home networks or large organizations, but are great for larger spaces.

Mesh network enables different devices to share internet connectivity. If a Node is away from the Hub, then it can communicate through the nearby Node until the Mesh Network does not reach the Router.

Mesh Network is used in these.

  • To keep watch over the house.
  • Use under medical supervision.
  • To keep watch and control for industrial.
  • in security systems.
  • Use in public service communication.
  • For example – Monitoring System can have mesh configuration and different types of Sensor Nodes spread over a wide area.

Mesh Topology Types
There are 2 types of mesh topology which are given below.

  1. Full Mesh Topology – In Full Mesh Topology all the nodes are connected to each other. This formula is used to calculate the number of connections in full mesh topology. (N is the number of computers in the network): N(N-1)/2 It is very expensive to implement. It is mostly used for Network Backbone.
  2. Partial Mesh Topology – In partial mesh topology, many other computers of the network have connection with two computers of the network. It is less expensive and which also helps in reducing redundancy. Partial Mesh Topology is more practical. If one of the primary computers or connections in the network fails, the rest of the network continues to function.

Difference between Mesh Network and Traditional Wi-fi

  • Traditional Wi-fi consists of a single network connection in which requests are made for devices to be allowed to connect to a central router.
  • A mesh network does not rely on a single access point, rather it allows devices to be linked together for data routing between clients.
  • In Wi-fi a traditional router acts as a centralized access point and mesh networks are decentralized.
  • Wi-fi can be recommended for low budget and small space, but it is right to consider Mesh Network in large area where cost is not a concern.

Advantages of Mesh Topology
Mesh network includes the following advantages.

  • It can handle high amount of traffic as multiple devices can transmit data simultaneously.
  • This topology provides multiple routes to success in Destination and Tons Redundancy.
  • If a device fails then there is no break or data transmission in the network.
  • When the device is added, the work of data transmission between other devices is not interrupted.
  • Identifying the fault in this is a straightforward task.
  • There is no traffic problem as there is dedicated point to point link for each computer.
  • If any kind of attack is done then Single Node can be easily changed.
  • Nodes can communicate directly with each other. For which the Central Access Point is not required.
  • Mesh networks can transmit signals over long distances.

Disadvantages of Mesh Topology

  • Implementation (apply) cost is high.
  • Installation in mesh is difficult.
  • Power is required more because in this all the nodes have to remain active all the time and share the load.
  • The possibility of unnecessary connection is high, which requires more capacity for high cost and low efficiency.
  • Maintenance with mesh is very challenging.
  • Mesh topology requires high cables and I/O ports for communication.
  • Latency can become a problem with low power WANs as there may not be enough processing capacity to handle the messaging.

Mesh topology development history

  • Wireless Mesh Radio Networks were created for military applications. The way each node can work as a router for other nodes and even if some nodes fail, other nodes can still communicate with each other.
  • Early wireless mesh network nodes had a single type of half-duplex radio. Which can either transmit or receive at the same instant but cannot do both at the same time.
  • It was developed along with Shared Mesh Networks. It was later superseded by Complex Radio Hardware.
  • Which was able to receive packets from the Upstream Node and send the packet to the Downstream Node simultaneously (on a different frequency or a different CDMA Channel) and it allowed Mesh Network.
