At breakfast the day before the time fixed for Frank's departure, Mr. Bassett told his son that he must make the most of his journey, enjoy it as much as possible, and bring back a store of useful knowledge. "To accomplish this," he added, "several things will be necessary; let us see what they are."
At the close of the next day--"Walter," said the General as the chief-of-staff entered his tent glittering in blue and gold,--"oh, thud devil!--you going to that dance?"
ONE:The Doctor interrupted with a guffah. "Come, Mrs. Masters, we need not beat about[Pg 118] the bush. I rather fancy you are aware of our relationship. Did you find her agreeable?"[Pg 48]
ONE:The wedding procession that our boys encountered consisted of the bride and her mother, with a servant to hold an umbrella to protect them[Pg 138] from the sun. Mother and daughter were richly attired, and their heads were covered with shawls heavily embroidered. Weddings in Japan do not take place in the temples, as might naturally be expected, but a part of the ceremonial is performed at the house of the bride, and the remainder at that of the bridegroom. After the wedding the bride accompanies her mother to the temple to say her prayers for a happy life, and this was the occasion which our young adventurers happened to witness. All this from his oscillating head, through his set teeth, in one malign monotone. As he quoted the preacher he mechanically drew his revolver. There was no bravado in this; he might lie, but he did not know how to sham; did not know, now, that his face was drawn with pain. Holding the weapon in one hand, under his absent gaze he turned it from side to side on the palm of the other. I put out my hand for it, but he dropped it into the holster and tried to return my smile.
THREE:His companion had no time to fire. Instantly after these two shots came a third, and some willows upstream filled with its white smoke. The second long rifle fell upon the bridge and its owner sank to his knees heaving out long cries of agony that swelled in a tremor of echoes up and down the stream. Another voice, stalwart, elated, cut through it like a sword. "Don't shoot, Smith, we're coming; save that hound for the halter!"
THREE:Bless me, to imagine your having come in while I was so busy thinking about what I had been reading that I never heard the door open, she said, hastily picking up the book which had fallen face downwards on the floor. Well, Im sure its time for tea. How the evenings draw in! But there are unpleasanter things than a muffin and a chat by the fire when alls said and done.
"That island has a fearful history," said Doctor Bronson, while they were looking at it when the steamer entered the harbor. He came a little nearer to Arthur, walking with a hop, skip and jump, rather like a man with his feet tied together.A PARTY ON THE TOKAIDO. A PARTY ON THE TOKAIDO.Frank said he was glad to know it, and he would be more glad when he knew what the kosatsu was."They were less fortunate than we," the Doctor remarked as they proceeded with their tow. Why?
